A Note on Pricing
Prices for freelance proofreading/editing vary and I cannot give a blanket price quote due to multiple factors. Each job is different and the final quote depends on:
- Turnaround time: How fast do you want your work to be returned?
- Type of document: Is specialised knowledge needed? Is it a brochure, a PhD thesis, a novel, or a textbook?
- Quality of writing: It takes longer to read and correct text littered with errors than text that has minimal errors
- Training and experience: I am a newbie (in 2023) as a freelancer, so my prices are currently set at the minimum rate as advised by the Chartered Institute of Editors and Proofreaders.
Having said all this, before I accept a job and offer you a quote, I will request to read through your text in order to see if it is something that I can take on (considering the factors listed above).
Please note that the rate is either per hour or per 1000 words, and the convention is to charge you for the full hour or 1000 words. That is, where a job does not take me up to 1 hour to complete, I will charge the hourly rate. Similarly, I will charge for 1000 words where the job is less than 1000 words.

- Students: £10 per 1000 words

PRoofreading
This is the quality check. When you send me your final draft I will work line-by-line and get rid of any remaining grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors. If necessary, I will also ensure that there is consistency from a textual, typographical and layout perspective, that any cross-references are correct, and that page numbers and running heads have been rendered appropriately. I track all changes and make suggestions where needed.
proof-editing
This is the middle-way between proofreading and copy-editing. While proofreading is, put simply, a quality check, copy-editing involves giving more detailed advice about the work. With proof-editing, I will offer the same proofreading service, but with the added value of constructive critique, helping to develop and improve upon your work. For example, I will make suggestions in places where I feel a more appropriate word/phrase could be used, or if your third paragraph will be better as the first paragraph, I would point that out. I track all changes made.

structural editing
My MA in Creative Writing has put me in a good position to offer services as a Structural Editor. I will go through your work and give you detailed advice about the various elements of your work. For creative writers, this includes, but is not limited to: overall plot, characterisation, point of view, etc. For students, this includes, but is not limited to: restructuring, rephrasing, rewording for stronger impact etc. I will be looking at the bigger picture with you with a fresh set of eyes, while offering constructive feedback.
If you go on to use me as a proofreader, I will offer you a reasonable proofreading discount 🙂
For the new writer
Because I love to read and write, I would like to offer free advice for new writers when my workload is light. When I was starting out as a new writer, I remember wishing I had someone with experience to read my work and guide my hand. Well, now that I have some experience of my own, I would love to help out whenever I can. Just drop me a message and I’ll get back to you! (This service is only available when I have free time between paid jobs).
